The First Story is the first film in a trilogy of "westerns." Here the central idea is Power in its various forms, especially as seen overland in the quintessential American West: the big rigs on I 90 and the freight trains crossing Wyoming. It is the contrast of these machines to the broad landscape and animal life that digs at this mythological space and questions what other meanings might be created.

Denny O'Hara marries Eileen O'Connor. He learns his elderly mother has been evicted. He finds her dead and sets out to kill the landlord and finds him already dead. A local priest urges him to flee to America fearing he will be accused of landlord's death.

Broncho Billy intoxicated, enters Brown's general store, knocks over a barrel of brooms, and is about to help himself to the chewing tobacco, when the grocer interferes. Brown finally shoots Broncho Billy in the wrist. Mary Walker, a villageite enters, and discovering Broncho Billy suffering from the wound, washes and bandages it for him.

The relationship of an outlaw and a bandit is put to the test on this steely desert day.
