Film režiséra Michela Placida vychází z románu Giancarla de Cataldo, který zachycuje pravdivý příběh zločinecké organizace Banda della Magliana, která v 70. letech prakticky ovládla římské podsvětí. Na počátku všeho je krádež auta, která spojí skupinu kluků z ulice. Ti si v den krádeže určí přezdívky (Libanese, Freddo, Dandi, Grana - posledně jmenovaný ovšem vzápětí umírá) a po letech se sejdou a rozhodnou se získat peníze únosem vlivného barona. Libanese poté navrhne, aby peněz využili k založení vlastní organizace, která by ovládla obchod s drogami v celém Římě. Za použití nemalé dávky násilí se jim to podaří a skupina se stává obávanou sílou podsvětí, která se spojí mimo jiné také s mafiánskými organizacemi.

Dívenka Bertille zahlédne v lese lišku a chce se s ní spřátelit. Trvá dlouho, než se jí to podaří, ale liška si na ni postupně zvyká a projevuje jí čím dál větší důvěru. Odnese lišku zpátky do lesa, a přestože se poraněná liška uzdraví, je to pro dívku velké ponaučení. Příběh je zarámován jako vyprávění matky, jíž se Bertille stala. Ve stejném pokoji jako kdysi ona teď bydlí její syn a ona mu vypráví před spaním o svém letním přátelství s liškou.
