개썰매를 이용해 우편물을 배달하던 알래스카의 작은 마을에 비행기 조종사가 나타난다. 그가 마을의 우편물 담당자에게 이제부터 개썰매 보다 훨씬 빠른 비행기로 우편물을 수송하겠다고 말하자, 마을 전체가 술렁인다. 꾀를 낸 우편물 담당자는 썰매와 비행기의 우편배달 경기에서 승리한 쪽에게 우편 수송을 맡기기로 결정하고, 결국 우편배달 경기가 시작된다. 하지만 경기도중 짙은 안개로 비행기는 추락하고, 개설매가 경기에서는 이기지만 아무도 추락한 조종사를 구하려고 하지 않는다. 결국 개썰매의 리더인 발토는 아무런 도움도 받지 못하고 혼자 조종사를 구하러 깊은 산골짜기로 들어가는데…
