Det er Harrys tredje år på Galtvort. Sirius Svart er ute etter den unge trollmannen, sjeleslukende desperanter kretser truende over skolen, mens en tilhenger av den avskyelige Han-du-vet lurer innenfor slottets murer. Og Harry vil bli tvunget til å konfrontere dem alle.
Når Harrys navn trekkes fra ildbegeret, må han delta i en tøff kamp om ære mellom tre trollmannsskoler. Men siden han aldri meldte seg på turneringen selv, hvem var det da som gjorde det? Harry mistenker at farene kan lure til og med inne på slottet, men Humlesnurr er mer opptatt av å forberede ham på den nært forestående, siste kampen. Det avgjørende oppgjøret nærmer seg raskt, men kjærligheten blomstrer likevel - selv om Galtvort kanskje aldri vil bli som før.
