Ačkoli film vychází ze skutečných událostí, je z velké části fiktivním ztvárněním života Jema Belchera (Matt Hookings) z doby, kdy vyrůstal a sledoval svého dědečka Jacka Slacka (Russell Crowe), jak bojuje jako boxer s holými pěstmi. Jem je svou matkou neustále varován před následováním dědečkova života.
