Životní osud umělce v období let 1400 až 1423 na pozadí mocenských rozbrojů, bratrovražedných válek a tatarských nájezdů není historicky věrným zpodobněním ruských dějin. Tarkovského stylizace je však natolik niterně přesvědčivá, že zde středověk vyvstává v obdivuhodně komplexní šíři. Nezapomenutelné panoramatické jízdy kameramana Vadima Jusova, s nímž Tarkovskij spolupracoval od diplomního filmu Válec a housle (1960) až po Solaris (1972), dokážou svou dokumentární povahou připodobnit svět, který je i ve své naprosté stylizovanosti nesmírně přirozený.

Ve skandálním příběhu milostného trojúhelníku a touhy po společenském vzestupu si zahráli představitelé nejmladší generace Montgomery Clift, Shelley Winters a Elizabeth Taylor, která zde dokonala proměnu z dětské (respektive adolescentní) herečky ve smyslný sex symbol. The island's leader, Ratchet, impressed with the find and in search of the Golden Crown himself, invites the crew to join him in his search and the crew along with Ratchet and his henchmen enter the cave. As it turns out, the islands true form, is that of a giant turtle. Ratchet, who had known this all along, uses his mechanical castle to take control of the turtle, in order to use it, to take over the world. Now the Straw Hats have to stop not only Ratchet, but also the helpless turtle, from crashing into a nearby island.
