Stále působivá filosofická sci-fi Andreje Tarkovského se odehrává v blíže neurčené budoucnosti a líčí příběh kosmonautů, kroužících na vesmírné stanici kolem záhadné planety Solaris, jež představuje dosud neznámou formu vědomí - je totiž schopna zhmotňovat lidská přání, představy i vzpomínky. Kosmonauty tyto přeludy natolik stresují, že se ocitají na pokraji psychického selhání. Ušetřen není ani psycholog, jenž byl vyslán celý podivný případ vyšetřit: setkává se s přízrakem své zemřelé ženy, kterou nesmírně miloval. Tarkovského ovšem nezajímají napínavé vizuální efekty či nenadálé zvraty, chce dospět k podobenství o hranicích lidského poznání. Court huntsman, Søtoft, is courting his daughter Else’s lady-in-waiting, Miss Engelke. That’s why it’s a bit of a punch in the stomach when, late one evening, he discovers his son Ove in close contact with her. Chamberlain von Plessen, who had been gossiping to Søtoft and is himself spying on the young couple, is going to set fire to the room they’re in. The hurt Søtoft wants to leave the young couple to their cruel fate – that is until he discovers that it’s not Engelke, but his daughter Else, who is trapped in the flames with her brother. His friends, his time partner and the artists he frequented are portrayed in their everyday life or object of the mechanical gaze of the camera, a filter through which to look at the outside world.
All the protagonists move about in a Tokyo Bar that has an entire wall taken up with a black-and-white reproduction of a photo of Monument Valley. The action starts as Billy the Kid, in full living color, walks out of the photo and gets a job as a waiter. Along with him on the working staff are a samurai straight out of the history books, a G.I. from World War II, and several other anachronistic characters. The plot (as such) revolves around keeping away the brutal mobsters and thugs who dominate the city streets outside of the bar, making the tavern safe for its easily recognized facsimiles of well-known characters.

Through the seven “wandering” characters that we follow at different ages, from birth to old age, we witness their dignified struggle for survival. At the cemetery, in an abandoned factory, in an asylum, in a landfill, in places full of sorrow, our heroes search for love and togetherness. By combining documentary material, animation and acting interpretation of the thoughts of our heroes, we get to know lives between disappointment and hope, quite similar to ours.
