Slapta Sobiboro koncentracijos stovykla buvo įkurta Lenkijos teritorijoje, netoli Ukrainos. 1942-1943 metais joje buvo nužudyta tūkstančiai iš visos Europos suvežtų žydų bei rusų karo belaisvių (skirtingais duomenimis, aukų skaičius svyruoja tarp 170 ir 250 tūkstančių). 1943-aisiais į stovyklą buvo atvežtas rusų karininkas Aleksandras Pečerskis (jį vaidina pats K. Chabenskis). Vos per tris savaites jis sugebėjo suorganizuoti kalinių sukilimą, kurio metu maždaug 400 žmonių, ginkluotų kirviais, nužudė keliolika SS prižiūrėtojų ir per minų lauką pabėgo iš stovyklos. Daugiau nei pusę jų naciai sugavo ir nužudė, likusiems pavyko ištrūkti ir vėliau prisijungti prie partizanų. Po sukilimo Sobiboro koncentracijos stovyklą naciai sulygino su žeme, panaikindami bet kokius savo buvimo pėdsakus. Pats A. Pečerskis sėkmingai išgyveno karą ir mirė tik 1990 metais, sulaukęs 81-erių.
