Keiko, whom everyone calls Mama, narrates her story: she's a hostess on the Ginza, 30, a widow. She describes life's vicious cycle: acting cheerful around drunks, dressing and living well to convey confidence, needing money for these expenses and for her demanding mother and brother, and knowing she's growing older.

داستان آن در سال ۱۹۶۹ و شهر لس آنجلس رخ می‌دهد. ریک دالتون (لئوناردو دی‌کاپریو) بازیگر فیلم‌های وسترن در تلویزیون‌های سیاه‌وسفید در اواخر دهه ۵۰ و اوایل دهه ۶۰ میلادی می‌باشد که به مرور زمان شاهد کمرنگ شدن نقش و طرفدارانش در هالیوود می‌شود. بدلکار وی شخصی با نام کلیف بوث (برد پیت) است که سالیان سال در کنار ریک مشغول به همکاری بوده‌است. پس از کمرنگ شدن کار ریک وی به الکل روی می‌آورد و کار خود را در هالیوود تمام شده می‌داند همچنین شایعه‌هایی برای ریک به وجود آمده‌است که وی همسر خود را به قتل رسانده‌است و همین باعث می‌شود که وی از زندگی ناراضی باشد. در طرف دیگر کلیف فردی است که در یک تریلر زندگی میکند اما به مراتب رضایت از زندگی بیشتری نسبت به ریک دارد. شارون تیت (مارگو رابی) همسر رومن پولانسکی منزل ریک را اجاره کرده‌است. از طرفی نیز استیو مک‌کوئین (دیمین لوئیس) با در مهمانی که توسط پلی‌بوی صورت گرفته‌است با ریک صحبت میکند و این صحبت راه گشای ادامه کار ریک می‌باشد.
