Iconic imageries and moments of strange magic in California.

Amit Dutta recorded several conversations with Prof. B.N. Goswamy, an important art historian of India, covering his entire body of work. Interspersed with his talks were also some silences. This film draws upon some of those moments of silence and weaves them into a web of ideas and images that fill the art-historian’s mindscape.

Shepherdesses are perfectly present-day, they often live alone but also with partners or with their family, and therefore they are fully involved in their social and economic communities. The film follows the director’s experience while living with them for some time, connecting with them deeply. These bonds of friendship and affection have become true narrative, spontaneous and intimate, of the protagonists’ motivations, difficulties and satisfactions.

March 1945: an air raid destroys a fishing village. The homeless are hosted by Brother Angelo in the convent of San Fruttuoso in Camogli: years pass but the houses are not rebuilt and when the prior dies, the convent is sold to the rich engineer Milone, determined to transform it into a holiday complex. To prevent the homeless from ending up on the streets, Brother Angelo devises every possible expedient, even a fake miracle while waiting for San Fruttuoso to perform a real one.

1989: 64th and last year of the Showa era. A girl is kidnapped and killed. The unsolved case is called Case 64 ('rokuyon'). 2002: Yoshinobu Mikami, who was the detective in charge of the Case 64, moves as a Public Relations Officer in the Police Affairs Department. His relation with the reporters is conflicted and his own daughter is missing. The statute of limitations for the Case 64 will expire in one year. Then a kidnapping case, similar to the Case 64, takes place. The rift between the criminal investigation department and police administration department deepens. Mikami challenges the case as a public relations secretary.

In this video, the artist tries to overcome the effects of distance, and reflects on geography represented in exile due to war, and on the psychological distance represented in each one’s approach to her womanhood. The video beautifully weaves personal images and audio recordings of a very intimate nature, binding the personal with the political. Reading aloud from letters sent by her mother in Beirut, Hatoum creates a visual montage reflecting her feelings of separation and isolation from her Palestinian family. The personal and political are inextricably bound in a narrative that explores personal and family identity against a backdrop of traumatic social rupture, exile and displacement.

Chytilová was not allowed to direct films between 1969 and 1976. The sole exception was the made-for-TV film Kamarádi, now virtually unknown.
