Veliäisen Marge-tädin leijuessa yötaivaalla Harry suuntaa kohti kolmatta vuottaan Tylypahkassa. Tuskallinen kyyti Poimittaislinjalla vie hänet Viistokujalle missä hän saa kuulla, että karannut vanki, Sirius Musta, jahtaa häntä. Näin alkaa uusi lukukausi. Tylypahkassa Harry ja hänen ystävänsä oppivat Hevoskotkan lähestymisen tarkkuutta vaativan taidon, hahmonvaihtajamöröillä huvittelun ja jopa ajassa taaksepäin siirtymisen. Sieluja syövät ankeuttajat leijailevat koulun yllä Harrya uhkaillen ja kirotun Hänen-joka-jääköön-nimeämättä kannattaja väijyy linnan muurien sisäpuolella. Ja Harryn on kohdattava heidät kaikki.

Kun Harry Potterin nimi putkahtaa esiin Liekehtivästä pikarista, hänestä tulee ottelija kolmen velhokoulun väliseen huikeaan kamppailuun – Kolmivelhoturnajaisiin. Mutta Harry ei laittanut nimeään pikariin, joten kuka laittoi? Harryn pitää kohdata kuolettava lohikäärme, hurjat vesidemonit sekä lumottu labyrintti vain päätyäkseen julman Hänen-kenen-nimeä-ei-pidä-mainita kynsiin.

Hänen kätyrinsä kuolonsyöjät ovat vallanneet taikaministeriön ja jopa Tylypahkan velhokoulun. Heidän tärkein tehtävänsä on kuitenkin jäljittää Harry Potter, jonka Voldemort haluaa saada kynsiinsä... elävänä!

Yhdessä he etsivät ratkaisua Voldemortin suojauskeinoihin, ja siksi Dumbledore värvää vanhan ystävänsä ja kollegansa Horatius Kuhnusarvion, jolla on hallussaan elintärkeää tietoa. Välienselvittelyn häämöttäessä romanssi kukkii Harrylle, Ronille, Hermionelle ja heidän luokkatovereilleen. Rakkautta on ilmassa, mutta vaara vaanii edessä, ja Tylypahka ei ehkä ole enää entisensä.

Harry aloittaa viidennen vuotensa Tylypahkan velhokoulussa. Hän saa tietää, että velhoyhteisössä kielletään laajalti Harryn äskettäinen kohtaaminen häijyn Lordi Voldemortin kanssa – he sulkevat mieluummin silmänsä totuudelta kuin uskovat uutisia Voldemortin paluusta. Taikaministeri Cornelius Toffee pelkää, että Tylypahkan kunnianarvoinen rehtori Albus Dumbledore valehtelee Voldemortin paluusta heikentääkseen Toffeen arvovaltaa ja kaapatakseen itselleen tämän viran. Niinpä Toffee nimittää kouluun uuden pimeyden voimilta suojautumisen opettajan pitämään silmällä Dumbledorea ja Tylypahkan oppilaita. Mutta professori Dolores Pimenton ministeriön hyväksymät oppitunnit jättävät nuoret velhot toivottoman aseettomiksi pimeyden voimia vastaan, mikä saattaa heidät ja koko velhoyhteisön vaaraan.
