Na hun zaak in New York te hebben opgelost (zie The Thin Man) gaat het echtpaar Nick en Nora Charles terug naar San Francisco. Daar worden ze opnieuw geconfronteerd met een moordmysterie. Nick Charles en zijn vrouw Nora hebben een baby gekregen. Nog net voor Nicky's eerste verjaardag krijgen ze een telefoontje uit Long Island van Nora's oom, kolonel MacFay.
