På sin vandring landet rundt er Volle (Carl Astrup) med sin skærslipperbør nået til København. Volle er en gammel vagabond der elsker sin frihed overalt i verden. Hans arbejde giver ham lige til dagen og vejen, og engang imellem en snaps i tilgift, og mere forlanger han ikke af tilværelsen. En tilfældighed eller et af skæbnens luner om man vil gør Volle til plejefar for den 11 årige Peter (Fredbjørn Bjørnsson) søn af den unge enke Grete Jensen (Betty Söderberg). Grete er forelsket i den unge flyttemand Max Jørgensen (Jens Asby) og han i hende. Peter kommer tilfældigvis til at overvære at Max kysser hans mor, han føler sig svigtet og flygter uden et ord hjemmefra. På landevejen træffer han Volle og fortæller ham en lille løgn om at han er flygtet fra værgerå...
