ゴジラシリーズ第16作。ゴジラ生誕30周年記念として前作から9年振りに制作された。1975年まで制作された「昭和シリーズ」との繋がりはなく、第1作(1954年)「ゴジラ」の直接の続編としてリブートされた、俗に言う「平成シリーズ」の第1作。大黒島沖で遭難した漁船の生存者・奥村は荒れ狂う嵐の中で巨大な怪物の姿を目撃していた。奥村を救助した東都日報の牧は生物学者・林田の助言を求めるが、林田は30年前に帝都を襲撃し東京湾で葬られたゴジラが目覚めたと推測。はたしてゴジラは復活していた。ソ連原潜を沈め、静岡井浜原発に現れると放射能を吸収し海へと消えたゴジラ。だがそれは破滅へのプロローグでしかなかった。

『インフェルノ』（原題：Inferno）は、映画『サスペリア』で成功を収めたイタリアの映画監督ダリオ・アルジェントが、その後アメリカ資本で作ったホラー映画（1980年）である。原作はトマス・ド・クインシーの『深き淵よりの嘆息』。『サスペリア』に続く「魔女3部作」の2作目とされる。 ニューヨークに住むローズは、近所の骨董屋で『三母神』（THE THREE MOTHERS、三人の母）という本を見つける。そこに綴られていた建物に関する記述が、彼女が今暮らしているアパートのことであることがわかり、大いに興味を抱くようになる。 『三母神』の著者はバレリ。幾世紀前の建築家らしいその彼は3人の魔女のために家を建てたという。場所はフライブルク、ローマ、そしてニューヨーク。ローズはまさにその魔女「暗黒の母（マーテル・テネブラルム）」のために建てられた館に住んでいたのだ。彼女は、弟マークにそのことを知らせる手紙を投函した後、好奇心から自宅の地下室を調べ始めるが、そこには死体が……。
